Schools struggle to fill support positions

Schools nationwide are facing serious shortages of school nutrition professionals, bus drivers and substitute teachers, says Chip Slaven, the National School Boards Association’s interim director. Pearl West, child nutrition manager for Gregorio Esparza Elementary School in San Antonio, says the district needs three additional nutrition professionals, but the positions are difficult to fill because wages are not competitive compared with other foodservice jobs.
