We are Korea Future Initiative. We document violations, establish truths, and sound alarms.
Based in London, United Kingdom and Seoul, South Korea, Korea Future Initiative (KFI) is an NGO that promotes and defends human rights in North Korea. We use information technologies and documentation methods to discover, analyse, organise and present evidence about human rights violations and abuses. We are passionate about establishing the truth and advocating for justice. Our team works in the UK, South Korea, and throughout China and Southeast Asia, and includes North Korean exiles.
KFI is deeply rooted in the North Korean human rights movement, with over a decade of experience and a high level of expertise in documenting human rights abuses. We are a group of human rights researchers and North Korean exiles who work collaboratively on specific and pressing human rights violations to equip governments and international organisations with evidence and authoritative human rights information that support strategies to effect tangible and positive change in North Korea. Our work started in 2013 with the European Alliance for Human Rights in North Korea, an organisation dedicated to platforming exiled North Korean voices. In 2020, we have evolved into one of the global leaders in documenting evidence of human rights violations in North Korea, including on sexual violence, Freedom of Religion or Belief, and the North Korean penal system.
KFI is a small, international organisation that punches above its weight. We have provided direct support to victims, briefed governments around the world, been the first to report on violations, and have mobilised the exiled community to speak out. Our strong networks across the United Kingdom and South Korea afford us with a remarkable network and the level of trust with human rights organisations and exile-led North Korean NGOs.

AIM & PURPOSE OF ENGAGING A FUNDRAISING CONSULTANT
KFI is lucky enough to have secured funding for the next few years, but the lack of diversification in our funding streams is of concern. We want to expand and diversify our income streams to include support from international human rights funders within the next few years. We want to do this to ensure long-term sustainability, to expand our impact, and to further build our capacity to deliver high-level research on human rights in North Korea.
KFI is seeking a consultant with a record of achievement in securing grant funding from large international human rights funders to help develop a strategy for us to engage and build relationships with large international human rights funders with a longer-term view of securing funding from those sources of funding. The consultant will report to the CEO of KFI and deliver the following outputs and activities:
- Further develop our case for support to appeal to large international human rights funders.
- Identify appropriate funding opportunities from large international human rights funders to ultimately support KFI core costs. Measured by a donor pipeline consisting of at least 25 potential prospects to approach.
- Engage with and solicit and secure initial interest from at least 3-5 major human rights funder in the KFI work via direct enquiries and meetings.
- Liaise with our CEO, CSO, and Fundraising Officer to develop and implement a multi-year outreach strategy for engaging these prospects, with a multi-year annual action plan for this outreach over the next 5 years.
- While there is no hard financial target for this brief, we anticipate all proposals to define and articulate the financial return and timeframe for securing financial support from the produced pipeline and engagement strategy.

FEES and CONTRACT LENGTH
It is anticipated that a consultant will be formally engaged in April 2021 and that the role will be spread throughout the year. This will be confirmed at interview stage. This role can be performed remotely from anywhere with internet access.
Our maximum budget for the fundraising consultancy contract, including consultant expenses and VAT where applicable, is £10,000. The agreed fee would be paid at intervals according to an agreed delivery plan and on receipt of an invoice.
The consultant is responsible for all income tax liabilities and National Insurance or similar contributions relating to the fee payment as required by law. The consultant required to have relevant insurances in place including Professional Indemnity Insurance and, if appropriate, Employers’ Liability Insurance as required by law. On appointment, the contractor will need to provide a statement about how they manage personal data to GDPR.
